At Forestiere Underground Gardens, the relationship between a home and the ground is reversed. Rather than treating difficult hardpan as an obstacle to work around, Baldassare Forestiere carved a complex of patios, grottoes and garden courts into it. Arches and stonework make the material part of the design.
The guided tour introduces the Sicilian immigrant's work over forty years and moves through underground rooms, passages and courtyards. The operator lists a duration of about an hour and recommends clothing suitable for varying temperatures. Ask about the current accessibility information for your group before booking.
Tours are strongly recommended by reservation, with walk-ins dependent on capacity. Reserve for every person, including small children. Current admission is $25 for adults eighteen–fifty-nine, $23 for seniors sixty and older and $14 for ages five–seventeen; children four and younger enter free.
The site is at 5021 West Shaw Avenue. Nearby rail construction can change traffic and street parking, so the operator recommends arriving twenty minutes early. Check the current travel guidance rather than assuming an on-site parking lot. Within the tour, look at how light, planted space and structure relate to one another.
